Roman

Roman is a historic city situated in Neamț County within the Western Moldavia region of northeastern Romania. Strategically located at the confluence of the Siret and Moldova rivers, it lies approximately 46 kilometers east of the county capital, Piatra Neamț, and serves as a key transport hub connecting major cities like Bacău and Iași. The settlement was named after Roman I of Moldavia, a Voivode who utilized the city as the capital of the Lower Country to centralize power during the formative years of the Moldavian state. Its origins date back to the late 14th century, with the earliest recorded mention appearing in the Novgorod Chronicle between 1387 and 1392.

The city holds profound historical significance as the site of one of the first official documents of young Moldavia, signed by Voivode Roman I in 1392, which featured the earliest fully legible version of the national seal. In 1408, it became an important Orthodox bishopric under Alexandru cel Bun. Architecturally, the landscape evolved significantly in the late 15th century when Stephen the Great replaced an old earthen fortification with a robust stone fortress on the banks of the Siret River. This era also saw the construction of significant religious structures, including the Cathedral of Saint Parascheva, reflecting the city's long-standing role as a diocesan see for both Orthodox and Catholic communities.

Today, Roman functions as a vibrant municipality preserving its rich cultural heritage through landmarks such as the History Museum, housed in the historic Nevruzzi House, and the Archbishop Cathedral with its distinctive bell tower. The city also honors its connection to the world-renowned conductor Sergiu Celibidache, maintaining his former residence as a point of interest. While the medieval stone fortress has largely succumbed to time, the urban fabric remains defined by these historical layers, blending administrative importance with a deep sense of regional identity rooted in centuries of Moldavian history.
