Réka Castle

Réka Castle is a ruined fortress located in Baranya county, Hungary, situated on a hilltop near the town of Mecseknádasd. Overlooking the entrance to the Old Mine's Valley, the site is currently marked by a cross and consists of scattered stone remnants rather than a standing structure. The castle features a large courtyard approximately 200 meters long and 36 meters wide, which was originally enclosed by a thick stone wall. Excavations have revealed the foundations of round guard towers, a single-storey row of buildings with a shingled roof, and parts of a multi-storey tower, suggesting a robust defensive design typical of medieval fortifications in the region.

The historical significance of Réka Castle extends beyond local borders, as it is famously linked to the English royal family. Local folklore and historical accounts suggest that in the mid-11th century, Prince Edward the Exile found refuge here during the reign of King Stephen I of Hungary. Edward was granted the estate known as Terra Britanorum de Nadasd, where his children, including Saint Margaret of Scotland and Edgar the Ætheling, were born. While the exact construction date remains debated among experts, with theories ranging from ancient Celtic or Illyrian origins to 9th-century Frankish architecture, the first written charter explicitly mentioning the castle dates to 1309.

Today, the castle exists only as an archaeological site, having likely been destroyed by fire during the Ottoman wars between the 16th and 17th centuries. Following its abandonment, local residents dismantled much of the remaining stonework to construct their own homes and mills, leaving little of the original superstructure intact. Despite its ruined condition, the location remains a point of interest for historians and visitors due to its unique connection to the House of Wessex and its strategic position within the Mecsek hills. The site serves as a tangible link to both Hungarian medieval history and the broader narrative of European royal exiles.
