Râșnov Fortress

Râșnov Fortress, known locally as Cetatea Râșnov, is a prominent medieval refuge castle situated in the town of Râșnov within Brașov County, Romania. Located strategically near the Bran Pass, the fortress was constructed between 1211 and 1225 during the rule of the Teutonic Knights in the Burzenland region. Designed as a Fliehburg-type fortification, its primary architectural purpose was to serve as a defensive sanctuary for local Romanian and Saxon villagers facing invasions from Ottoman and Tatar armies. The site sits atop a hill that archaeological research suggests has held fortifications since prehistoric and Dacian times, making it a critical component of the broader Transylvanian defense system.

The historical significance of Râșnov is marked by its resilience and unique community role. First documented in 1335 after withstanding a devastating Tatar incursion, it remained unconquered for centuries while protecting inhabitants from nearby villages like Cristian and Ghimbav. Unlike typical military garrisons, prolonged sieges forced locals to turn the fortress into a long-term residence, creating a self-sustaining community within its walls. Notable historical events include its use as a retreat by Michael the Brave in 1600 and its singular capture in 1612 by Prince Gabriel Báthory, which occurred only after enemies discovered and cut off its secret water spring. This vulnerability later prompted improvements to ensure independent water access.

Today, the fortress stands as a major cultural landmark and tourist attraction following significant renovations completed in 2010.
