Ramana Castle
Ramana Castle, also known as Ramana Tower, is a historic architectural monument situated in the village of Ramana within the Sabunchu district of Baku, Azerbaijan. While some researchers suggest its origins date back to the 12th century during the era of the poet Nizami Ganjavi, historical records primarily attribute its construction to the 14th century under the order of the Shirvanshahs. The structure serves as a significant example of medieval defensive architecture on the Absheron Peninsula. Its design features a square-shaped tower divided into four distinct tiers, differing from the typical three-tiered circular towers of the region. The fortress includes an internal courtyard measuring 28 by 10 meters, with external walls fortified by rounded corner towers and a protected entrance located within a defensive courtyard.
The castle holds considerable historical significance as part of an interconnected network of fortresses built along the northeastern shores of the peninsula to guard against maritime threats. These structures functioned as an early warning system, using bonfires at night and smoke signals during the day to relay messages of approaching danger from one stronghold to another. Recognizing its cultural value, the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan has registered Ramana Castle as a monument of global significance. Furthermore, in 2001, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Centre's tentative list as part of the Caspian Shore Defensive Constructions, highlighting its importance alongside other regional defensive structures.
Today, Ramana Castle stands as a preserved testament to the military engineering and strategic planning of medieval Azerbaijan. Although specific details regarding its current operational use are limited in available records, its status as a registered monument ensures its protection and recognition.
