Pskov Kremlin

The Pskov Krom, also known as the Pskov Kremlin, is a historic citadel located in the central part of Pskov, Russia. Strategically positioned at the confluence of the Velikaya and Pskova rivers, this medieval fortress serves as a defining landmark of the city. While the site has ancient origins, the formidable stone walls that characterize the complex today were constructed beginning in the late 15th century. The architecture reflects the defensive needs of the era, featuring massive fortifications and towers designed to protect the settlement from invasion. It stands as a prime example of Russian military engineering from the late medieval period.

Historically, the Krom functioned as the administrative and spiritual heart of the independent Pskov Republic during the 15th century. The site holds immense cultural value and is currently recognized as a Russian nominated candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List under the "Great Pskov" designation. Despite its enduring presence, the structure has faced challenges; notably, a fire in 2010 caused damage to two of its historic towers, the Vlasyevskaya and the Rybnitskaya, which date back to the 13th through 16th centuries.
