Prozor Fortress
Prozor Fortress, also known as Tvrđava Prozor or Gradina, is a historic medieval stronghold located in the continental part of Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. Perched prominently on a hill just above the town of Vrlika in inland Dalmatia, the site commands strategic views of the surrounding landscape. The fortress was originally established as a small fortification by the ancient Illyrian tribe known as the Dalmatae, with origins potentially dating back to the 3rd century BC. Constructed primarily from local limestone, the structure evolved significantly over centuries, transforming from a tribal stronghold into a substantial castle during the medieval period.
The historical significance of Prozor Fortress is defined by its extensive list of rulers and its role in regional defense. In 1406, the Bosnian feudal lord Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić greatly expanded the site into a major fortress. Over the following centuries, control passed through various powerful entities, including Croatian nobility, the Ottoman Empire, and the Republic of Venice, before eventually falling under Austrian and French rule. This rich lineage reflects the turbulent military history of the Balkans, serving as a crucial link in a chain of nearby fortifications designed to protect the region from invasion.
Today, the fortress stands in a ruined condition, though it has undergone slight renovation efforts to preserve its remaining structures. Despite its age and partial decay, the site remains an important cultural landmark and is open to the public for visitation. Visitors can explore the remnants of the limestone walls and imagine the site's past glory under figures like King Tomislav and Grand Duke Hrvoje. Its location above Vrlika continues to offer a tangible connection to Croatia's deep historical roots, spanning from antiquity through the modern era.
