Poenari Fortress

Poenari Castle, also known as Poenari Citadel or the Citadel of Țepeș Vodă, is a historic ruined fortress located in Arefu, Argeș County, Romania. Perched dramatically on the plateau of Mount Cetatea, the site overlooks the Argeș River valley and faces the western side of the famous Transfăgărășan road near the Făgăraș Mountains. Accessing this remote stronghold requires a strenuous climb up 1,480 concrete steps, emphasizing its strategic position high above the surrounding canyon. The current structure was originally constructed starting in 1453, although historical records indicate an earlier fortress named Castle Argeș existed on or near the same site as early as the 13th century under the Wallachians.

The fortress holds immense historical significance as the primary residence and stronghold of Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century ruler whose brutal tactics inspired the fictional character Count Dracula. Before becoming Vlad's main citadel in the mid-14th century, the location served as a key defensive point for the Basarab dynasty. The architecture was designed for defense rather than comfort, utilizing the natural topography of the mountain to create an almost impregnable barrier against invading Ottoman forces.
