Pieniężno

Pieniężno is a historic town situated in northern Poland within the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, specifically in Braniewo County. Located on the Wałsza River in the Warmia region, the settlement traces its origins to an Old Prussian fort known as Malcekuke. In 1302, the Teutonic Knights constructed an Ordensburg castle near this site, establishing a stronghold that would define the area's early development. The town was formally founded in the 14th century, initially settled largely by Dutch immigrants from Pasłęk. Its name evolved from the original Prussian term to the German Mehlsack, meaning flour sack, before becoming the Polish Pieniężno. This etymology is famously reflected in the town's coat of arms, which features three bags of flour, commemorating a legendary 17th-century event where residents deceived Swedish besiegers by spilling their last grain to feign abundance.

The architectural and historical significance of Pieniężno is deeply tied to its medieval castle, originally built by the Teutonic Order. Although the fortress and town suffered destruction during conflicts between the Order and the Kingdom of Poland in 1414 and again during the Thirteen Years' War, the site remains notable for its association with the renowned astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Historical records indicate that Copernicus resided in the castle between 1518 and 1519 while administering local affairs for the Warmian Chapter. Following various wars and political shifts, including incorporation into Poland in 1454, the town endured periods of surrender and recapture that shaped its current identity.

Today, Pieniężno serves as a small municipal center with a population of approximately 2,800 residents. While the original medieval structures faced damage over centuries of warfare, the location of the former castle remains a point of historical interest, often highlighted in local tourism regarding Copernicus's stay. The town maintains its cultural heritage through its preserved name history and symbolic imagery, standing as a testament to the complex interplay of Prussian, German, and Polish influences in the Warmia region. It continues to function as an administrative seat within Gmina Pieniężno, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich, multi-layered past.
