Pejačević Castle in Našice

Pejačević Castle in Našice is a prominent lowland structure located in the town of Našice within Osijek-Baranja County, northeastern Croatia. Originally constructed between 1811 and 1812 in the Classicist style for Vincencije Ljudevit Pejačević, the building was significantly expanded and renovated in the mid-19th century by his relatives, transforming it into the Baroque-revival edifice seen today. These later modifications added thirteen new window openings, a decorative gable with volutes, a balustrade, and a clock. The architecture uniquely adapts to the sloping terrain, appearing as a one-story building from the entrance side while rising two stories on the park side. The interior remains richly decorated with stucco, wood paneling, and built-in furniture, featuring a grand lobby with a distinctive double semi-visible staircase.

The castle holds deep historical significance as the longtime seat of the noble Pejačević family, who owned numerous estates across Slavonia. It is notably remembered as the residence of Dora Pejačević, a celebrated Croatian composer and daughter of Ban Teodor Pejačević, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During World War II, the site served as a German Army headquarters and war hospital, suffering damage to its facade and roof. Following the conflict, the building was repurposed for various civic functions, including use as barracks, a school, and administrative offices.

Currently, the castle has been renewed and serves as a vibrant cultural hub for the community. It houses the Regional Museum, the city music orchestra, a public library with a reading room, and an art gallery. This adaptive reuse ensures the preservation of the landmark while maintaining its role as a center for local history and arts. The structure stands today not only as a testament to the architectural legacy of the Pejačević family but also as a functional space that continues to educate and inspire visitors in the Slavonia region.
