Parola Fort

Parola is a historic town and municipal council located in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, India. Situated on National Highway 6 between Surat and Dhule, the settlement lies at an elevation of 261 meters. While the town itself is centuries old, its most prominent landmark, Parola Fort, was constructed in 1726 by Sadashiv Rao Damodar Newalkar, a Jagirdar of the region. The site holds profound historical significance as the ancestral home of Rani Lakshmibai, the legendary Queen of Jhansi who became a central figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Her great-grandfather-in-law built the fort, and her adopted son, Damodar Rao, was born within the town limits in 1849, cementing the location's deep ties to the Newalkar family lineage.

The architectural legacy of the fort faced a dramatic turn following the uprising against British rule. In 1859, as a punitive measure against the Jhansi family's involvement in the rebellion, the British government confiscated the town and the fort. The authorities subsequently ordered the dismantling of the fortress, leaving only remnants of its original grandeur today. Despite this destruction, the site remains a crucial point of interest for historians and tourists exploring the life of Rani Lakshmibai. The town also hosts the Shree Balaji Temple, which stands alongside the fort ruins as a key local feature.

Currently, Parola functions as an active municipal council with a population recorded at over 34,000 in the early 2000s. Although the fort no longer stands in its complete form, the area preserves the memory of its royal past through local oral history and remaining structures associated with the Newalkar jagirdars. The town serves as a cultural link to the Maratha era and the specific heritage of the Konkanstha Tambe community. Visitors today come to witness the geographical setting where one of India's most celebrated freedom fighters spent her formative years, even though the physical structure of the 18th-century fort was largely erased in the mid-19th century.
