Pargadh

Pargad Fort, also known as Paargad, is a historic hill fort located in the Kolhapur District of Maharashtra, India. Situated approximately 28 kilometers from Chandgad and to the south of Kolhapur city, the structure stands within a region formerly part of the Maratha Empire. Constructed primarily from stone and lead, the fort is nestled in a serene environment characterized by lush green surroundings, making it a notable natural attraction in addition to its military heritage. The site is currently under the ownership of the Government of India and remains open to the public, inviting visitors to explore its historical grounds.

The fort holds significant historical value due to its association with prominent figures of the Maratha era. It was once controlled by the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later occupied by Chattrapati Shahu. Historical records indicate that the maintenance of the fort was entrusted to Raiba, the son of the famed warrior Tanaji Malusare. Today, the site houses a bronze statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji and a temple dedicated to Bhagawati Bhawani, serving as cultural landmarks for visitors. Access to Pargad Fort is available via trekking routes starting from the villages of Morle and Palye in the Dodamarg taluka. Regular bus services connect these points from Dodamarg, with additional direct transport available from Chandgad. Travelers approaching from Goa often pass through nearby towns such as Dodamarg, Palye, and Medhe, which are renowned for their beautifully crafted water tanks and the Tilari Dam.
