Parga Castle

Parga Castle is a medieval hilltop citadel located in the town of Parga within the Epirus region of Greece. Perched on a strategically vital rocky peninsula, the fortress overlooks the sea on three sides and the town on the fourth, serving as a dominant landmark since the fifteenth century. The structure is primarily composed of hewn ashlar stone, reflecting the robust military architecture required to defend against invasions from both land and sea. While initial fortifications were erected in the eleventh century with Norman assistance to protect residents from pirates, the castle as it is recognized today was largely rebuilt by the Republic of Venice during the 1400s to counter rising Ottoman influence in the area.

The site possesses a rich and turbulent history marked by shifts in power among various empires. Originally inhabited by the ancient Greek tribe of the Thesprotians, the location later saw rule by the Despot of Epirus and the Despotate of Arta before passing to Venetian control in 1401. The castle withstood an Ottoman siege in 1452 but was subsequently destroyed in 1537, only to be rebuilt later. Over the centuries, sovereignty changed hands multiple times, including periods under the First French Empire and Great Britain, before returning to Ottoman rule until 1913. These transitions highlight the fortress's critical role in regional geopolitical struggles throughout the medieval and early modern eras.

Currently, Parga Castle exists as a ruin under the ownership and management of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports. Despite its dilapidated condition, the site remains open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past and panoramic views of the surrounding coastline. The remnants of the strong fortifications stand as a testament to the engineering efforts of the Venetians and earlier builders who sought to secure this exposed coastal position. Today, it serves not only as a historical monument but also as a key cultural attraction that connects modern observers to the complex military history of northwestern Greece.
