Ozalj Castle

Ozalj Castle, known locally as Stari grad Ozalj, is a historic fortress situated in the town of Ozalj, Croatia. Perched dramatically on a limestone cliff overlooking the Kupa River, it stands as one of the most recognizable fortifications in the country. Although the exact year of its original construction is not specified in available records, the stronghold was first mentioned in 1244, indicating its medieval origins. Over the centuries, the site evolved from a defensive fortress into a residential castle. Its strategic location made it a vital component of regional defense networks, with historical documents from the late sixteenth century noting its role in guarding river crossings and supporting the supply chain for the nearby fortification of Karlovac.

The castle holds immense historical significance as the joint seat of two of Croatia's most noble families, the Frankopans and the Zrinskis. It served as the central stage for the ill-fated Zrinski–Frankopan conspiracy, a pivotal event that profoundly marked Croatian history and resistance against foreign rule. Throughout its existence, the property changed hands among various prominent entities, including the Babonić, Perlas, Batthyány, and Thurn und Taxis families, before eventually coming under the ownership of the Brethren of the Croatian Dragon. Today, the structure is designated as a protected cultural good by the Croatian state.
