Overlook Castle

Overlook Castle, also known as Seely Castle, is a historic house located in Asheville, North Carolina, situated atop Sunset Mountain. Built between 1912 and 1914 for Fred Loring Seely, son-in-law of prominent entrepreneur Edwin Wiley Grove, the castle was constructed on ten acres gifted by Grove. The structure showcases English manor architectural style and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 22, 1980. The castle spans approximately six acres and features distinctive design elements including two large panoramic glass windows offering sweeping views of Asheville, Jacobean ceilings, and surrounding English gardens.

The property has changed hands five times since its construction. The Seely family occupied the castle until Fred Seely's death in 1942. In 1949, Evelyn Grove Seely, the original owner's widow and Edwin Wiley Grove's daughter, sold the property to Asheville-Biltmore College, which operated there until 1961 when campus expansion needs prompted relocation. Subsequent owners included Jerry Sternberg, who modernized the heating system and roof, and Overlook Ministries. The current owners, the Wells family, purchased the castle in 1984 and undertook restoration efforts. Today, Overlook Castle remains a significant example of early twentieth-century residential architecture in North Carolina and continues to be a notable landmark in the Asheville area.
