Oituz

Oituz is not a castle but a village within the Brețcu commune in Covasna County, Transylvania, Romania. Situated at an altitude of 600 meters in the foothills of the Nemira and Brețcu Mountains, part of the Eastern Carpathians, the settlement lies on the banks of the Oituz River, which flows eastward toward Moldavia. The area is geographically significant as it sits near the borders of Bacău and Vrancea counties, connected by national road DN11 and historically served by a railway line originating in Sfântu Gheorghe. As one of three villages composing the Brețcu commune, alongside Mărtănuș and Brețcu itself, it functions as a rural residential area rather than a fortified structure or noble residence.

The historical significance of the broader region dates back to ancient times, notably hosting the Roman castra and settlement of Angustia located on the eastern side of the main village. The area was first officially attested in 1426 under King Sigismund, who granted privileges to local Romanians. While the specific village of Oituz does not have a separate construction date or architectural style listed in available records, the commune suffered a devastating F3 tornado on May 13, 1912, which destroyed over 1,500 homes across the area. This event marks a tragic chapter in the local history, reshaping the demographic and physical landscape of the settlements.

Currently, Oituz exists as a quiet component of a multi-ethnic commune with Hungarian and Romanian influences, reflected in its alternative name, Ojtoztelep. There is no evidence of a castle named Oituz; instead, the location is defined by its mountainous terrain, riverine setting, and role as a transit point between Transylvania and Moldavia.
