Nový zámok

Nový zámok
wikipedia

Nový zámok, translating to New Castle, is a historic fortress located on a hill south of the city center in Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia. Standing at an altitude of 630 meters, it marks the highest point within the city and offers a dominant vantage point over the surrounding area. Constructed between 1564 and 1571 by the local town council, this six-story stone structure was built as a strategic watchtower during the Ottoman wars. The decision to fortify the region followed the defeat of Hungarian troops at the Battle of Mohács in 1526, as the northern mining areas rich in precious metals required reinforced defenses against potential invasion.

Architecturally, the castle is a fine example of Renaissance style, characterized by its four distinctive bastions. Beyond its military function, the building served a unique civic role as the town's live clock, where the exact time was announced every quarter hour via trumpet blasts due to its prominent position. Today, Nový zámok remains intact and is recognized as a national cultural monument. It is open to the public and houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Anti-Turkish Wars in Slovakia across four of its floors. Visitors can ascend to the highest level to enjoy panoramic views of Banská Štiavnica and its scenic environs, making it both a historical landmark and a popular tourist destination.
