Novosilka Castle

Novosilka Castle is a historic fortress situated in the village of Novosilka within the Chortkiv Raion of Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. Originally constructed by the knightly Kostjuków-Wołodyjowski family, the site has been associated with their lineage since 1547. The structure was designed as a stone building encircled by defensive walls and featured four towers, representing a classic fortification style common to the region during that era. Today, it holds the official status of an architectural monument of local importance, recognized for its contribution to the cultural heritage of the area.

The castle possesses a turbulent history marked by destruction and eventual disappearance. In 1672, the fortress was devastated during a Turkish invasion and was never subsequently rebuilt. Its ruins persisted until the mid-19th century, at which point they were systematically demolished. The stone materials recovered from the site were repurposed for local development projects, including the construction of a church, various residential houses, and road paving. This reuse of materials signifies the complete functional end of the original complex, leaving only fragments of its former grandeur.

Currently, the site is in a ruined condition, with the primary surviving element being a round, multi-story structure known as Wołodyjowski's Tower, which dates back to the 17th century. Alongside this solitary tower, small overgrown sections of earthen fortifications remain visible on the landscape. These remnants serve as a quiet testament to the once-significant defensive stronghold that protected the village centuries ago. While the main residential and defensive buildings are gone, the existing tower stands as a poignant landmark for visitors interested in the military history of western Ukraine.
