Novo Brdo Fortress

Novo Brdo Fortress
wikipedia

Novo Brdo Fortress is a medieval Serbian fortification situated near the town of Novo Brdo in Kosovo, approximately 40 kilometers east of Pristina. Constructed around 1285 by King Stephen Uroš II Milutin, the structure was built using stone, limestone, and breccia to serve as a strategic defensive complex. Its primary purpose was to protect the region's abundant and lucrative mining operations, which yielded gold, silver, iron, and lead. The fortress formed a critical triad with nearby castles at Prizren and Prilepac to guard access roads, ensuring the security of what became the most important mining area in Serbia during the height of the Serbian Despotate between 1402 and 1459.

Historically, the site was a bustling multicultural hub, hosting Saxon miners, Albanian Catholics, and a significant merchant colony from the Republic of Ragusa. It functioned as a major administrative seat governed by both a vojvoda and a kefalija, and it was notably the location where the Mining Law was ratified in 1412. The fortress endured numerous sieges throughout the 15th century during conflicts involving the Ottoman Empire and later saw action during the Great Turkish War before falling into disuse by 1687. Today, the site exists as ruins with remaining walls reaching heights of up to 13 meters, comprising distinct Upper and Lower Town sections that have been subject to systematic archaeological research since 1952.

Recognized for its exceptional cultural value, Novo Brdo Fortress was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1948 during the Yugoslav era. Following the declaration of Kosovo's independence in 2008, it received temporary status as a special protective site and has been listed on the Ministry of Culture's heritage database since 2014. The name Novo Brdo translates to New Hill in Serbian, though historical records refer to it by various names including Novus Mons and Nowobordo. While currently in a ruined state, the fortress remains a vital historical landmark representing the economic and military significance of medieval Serbia.
