Næs verk

Næs Ironworks, historically known as Næs Jernverk or Baaseland Værk, is a significant industrial landmark located in Holt, now part of Tvedestrand municipality in Aust-Agder county, Norway. Established in 1665, the facility originally operated with its blast furnace at the Båsland farm before relocating to the Storelva river in 1738 to better utilize water power. This centralization marked the beginning of its identity as Næs Ironworks. The site features restored historical structures, including the main building and a furnace building equipped with a waterwheel, representing an important era of Norwegian industrial architecture driven by hydraulic energy and charcoal fueling.

The ironworks reached its peak prominence under the ownership of Jacob Aall, who purchased the enterprise in 1799 and transformed it into one of the country's most efficiently operated blast furnaces. During the early 19th century, the facility expanded significantly, doubling its capacity by 1830 and producing notable engineering feats such as a nineteen-meter cast-iron bridge at Fosstveit in 1837. Beyond production, the site was socially progressive for its time, establishing its own savings bank, health systems, and housing for workers on approximately seventy smallholdings by 1820. It also served as a humanitarian hub, importing wheat to support the local parish during the war with England between 1807 and 1814.

Operations at Næs Ironworks ceased in 1959 after nearly three centuries of continuous activity. Today, the site has been repurposed as the Næs Ironworks Museum, preserving the legacy of the region's industrial heritage. The complex stands as a testament to the technological and social advancements of pre-industrial Norway, showcasing how large-scale manufacturing communities functioned with integrated social support systems. Its historical importance is further recognized through the protection status of associated structures like the Fosstveit bridge, ensuring that the story of this once-thriving industrial center remains accessible to the public.
