Mora fort

Mora Fort, also known as Moragad, is a historic hill fort situated in the Baglan area of the Nashik district in Maharashtra, India. Perched on the Selbari hill range at an elevation of 4,450 feet, this stone structure was strategically built to monitor the ancient commercial road connecting Burhanpur and Surat. Although the exact year of construction is not explicitly recorded in available documents, it is categorized among forts established during the 16th century. The fort lies just east of the larger Mulher fort, and together with other nearby strongholds, it formed a critical defensive network controlling movement through the parallel Dolbari and Selbari hill ranges.

Currently, the fort exists as ruins under the ownership of the Government of India and remains open to the public. Architecturally, it is a modest installation featuring rock-cut cisterns, caves, and two well-preserved rock-cut gates, but it lacks significant constructed buildings. The site offers panoramic views of neighboring peaks such as Mangi-Tungi, Salher, and Hargad. While the pathway to the summit consists of carved stone steps and the ascent takes approximately one hour from the col between Mulher and Mora, visitors are advised to carry their own water as there is no reliable source on the fort itself.

The historical record for Mora Fort is sparse, with no separate detailed chronicles distinct from its neighbor, Mulher Fort. Its primary significance lies in its role as a watchtower for trade routes rather than as a site of major battles or royal residence. Today, it serves as a destination for trekkers and history enthusiasts interested in the Maratha military landscape. The medium-grade trek leads through scenic terrain to a site where small ponds and a Ganesh idol with a sword can still be seen, offering a glimpse into the past amidst the rugged Sahyadri mountains.
