Montemagno Monferrato Castle

Montemagno Monferrato Castle, known locally as Castello di Montemagno Monferrato, is a historic fortress situated in the village of Montemagno within the Piedmont region of Italy. Perched in a commanding position atop the local hill, the structure boasts a lineage dating back to 981, when it originally consisted of a simple keep protected by walls and a moat. Over the subsequent centuries, the castle evolved alongside the growing influence of its lords, who forged strategic alliances with the nearby city of Asti. However, regional conflicts between Asti and the March of Montferrat resulted in severe damage to the fortification in 1269 and partial destruction in 1290, necessitating a major reconstruction effort at the dawn of the fourteenth century.

Architecturally, the castle presents an irregular layout that reflects its long history of expansion and modification. The rebuilding phase in the 1300s introduced distinctive pointed-arch windows adorned with polychrome frames of alternating brick and tuff, a stylistic choice rooted in Asti traditions, along with a richly decorated belt course. Later renovations during the eighteenth century added large rectangular windows, balconies, and an elliptical courtyard to the complex. Today, access to the site is granted via a drawbridge spanning the surrounding moat, preserving its medieval defensive character while showcasing later aesthetic enhancements.

The historical narrative of the castle is marked by a succession of prominent families following the sixteenth-century annexation of Montferrat to the Duchy of Mantua. Ownership transferred through various houses, including the Della Cerda, Ardizzi, Callori, Griselli, Sanseverino, and Cavalchini families. Eventually, the property came into the possession of the Counts Calvi of Bergolo, who remain the owners of the estate today. This continuous occupation highlights the castle's enduring significance as a noble residence and a central landmark in the Monferrato landscape.
