Montalto Dora Castle

Montalto Dora Castle, known locally as Castello di Montalto Dora, is a historic fortress situated atop Mount Crovero in Montalto Dora, Piedmont, Italy. Overlooking the reflective waters of Lake Pistono, the structure dates back to between the 10th and 11th centuries. Originally comprising a tower, connecting walls, and a chapel, it evolved into a critical military stronghold controlling access to the Aosta Valley and the historic Via Francigena. By the 14th and 15th centuries, the site underwent significant modifications to enhance its defensive capabilities, resulting in an irregular quadrangular layout protected by double walls.

The castle possesses a rich and turbulent history, having endured multiple assaults over the centuries. In the 19th century, architects Carlo Nigra and Alfredo d'Andrade renovated the site, using its distinctive high crenellated walls and square keep as inspiration for the famous Borgo Medioevale in Turin. Today, the inner wall stands approximately 14 meters high with a perimeter exceeding 150 meters, featuring a long patrol walkway lined with numerous merlons.

In modern times, the castle has gained cultural significance beyond its military past. It served as a primary filming location for Dario Argento's 2012 horror film Dracula 3D, showcasing its atmospheric architecture to a global audience. More recently, the property attracted international attention in 2024 due to rumors that American actor Johnny Depp was interested in acquiring the estate while it was listed for sale.
