Micăsasa

Micăsasa is a commune situated in Sibiu County within the historic region of Transylvania, Romania. Located on the Transylvanian Plateau at an altitude of 284 meters, it rests on the banks of the Târnava Mare river in the northwestern part of the county. The administrative unit comprises four distinct villages: Chesler, Micăsasa, Țapu, and Văleni. The area is well-connected via national road DN14B and features a train station on the main railway line linking Bucharest to the Hungarian border. Additionally, the village serves as a stop along the Via Transilvanica long-distance hiking trail, highlighting its role in regional tourism and connectivity.

The locality holds significant historical value due to its Saxon heritage and religious architecture. Two of its component villages, Micăsasa and Țapu, are notable for possessing fortified churches, which are characteristic defensive religious structures built by the Transylvanian Saxons during the medieval period. The commune displays a rich diversity of faiths, evidenced by the presence of Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Reformed, and Orthodox churches. Historically a multi-ethnic community with German, Hungarian, and Romanian populations, recent census data indicates a demographic shift, with the population decreasing to 1,698 inhabitants in 2021, predominantly composed of ethnic Romanians.

Today, Micăsasa functions as a quiet rural commune that preserves its architectural legacy while serving local agricultural and residential needs. The fortified church in Țapu remains a key landmark, representing the defensive history of the region against past invasions. While the German population has significantly diminished since the mid-20th century, the physical evidence of their centuries-long presence endures through these stone fortifications and the layout of the villages. The commune continues to maintain its identity through its town hall and various active parishes, offering visitors a glimpse into the layered cultural history of southern Transylvania.
