Meghri Fortress
Meghri Fortress is a historic Armenian military structure situated on a hill north of the town of Meghri in Syunik Province, Armenia. Overlooking the old section of the town, the fortress was originally constructed in 1083 during the rise of the Syunik Kingdom. While its initial creation dates to the 11th century, the site underwent significant reconstruction in the 18th century under the direction of the renowned military commander Davit Bek. This later renovation was specifically engineered to withstand attacks from Turkish troops and to accommodate the evolving use of firearms during that era. The primary building material used throughout its history has been stone.
The architectural design of Meghri Fortress is distinct, characterized by six separate towers rather than continuous defensive walls. These towers were constructed in two shapes: four round and two rectangular, each featuring two floors approximately two meters high. A notable engineering feature includes the use of wooden beams within the walls to serve as earthquake-resistant zones. The towers were designed with narrow external walls and vertical internal surfaces, with entrances located on the north side to leverage natural barriers for protection against southern attacks. During the 18th-century rebuild, radial embrasures were added to the structures to support firearm defense.
Historically, the fortress played an active role in regional military operations within the Arevik province, leading to multiple cycles of destruction and rebuilding that make restoring its original form difficult. It was first documented by the historian St. Orbelian in the 13th century and survived various conflicts, including the Seljuk Turk capture in 1152. Today, five of the original towers remain preserved. Although partially demolished over the centuries, the site is currently open to the public and stands as a significant tourist attraction and archaeological landmark in the Syunik region.
