Medieval Town of Dubrovnik (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

The Medieval Town of Dubrovnik, also known as the Old Dubrovnik Fort in Višnjica, is a historic fortress located in the Višnjica area of the Ilijaš municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Perched atop Mount Hum at an elevation of 882 meters, the site overlooks the confluence of the Zenik mountain stream and the Misoča River. Although precise construction records are unavailable, historians estimate the fortress was built during the 13th century. This dating is supported by archival mentions from the Dubrovnik Chancellery in 1404, which reference the location under the name Doboruonich. During the medieval period, it served as the primary political center for the Vidogošći-Vogošći parish, a significant region situated between Sarajevo and Visočki polje.

The site holds considerable historical significance as the former seat of Batić Mirković, a Bosnian Knez, highlighting its role in local governance and nobility. Architecturally, it functioned as a fortified town complete with a podgrađe, or outer settlement, typical of medieval Bosnian defensive structures. In recognition of its cultural and archaeological value, the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina designated the site as a National Monument on October 8, 2003. This official status protects the ruins as a category archaeological site, ensuring the preservation of its remaining features for future study and appreciation.
