wikipedia

Manora Fort is a distinctive historic monument located in Peravurani, within the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. Situated approximately 20 kilometers from Pattukkottai and 60 kilometers from Thanjavur, the structure overlooks the Bay of Bengal. Built between 1814 and 1815 by Serfoji II, the Maratha ruler of Tanjore, the fort was constructed to commemorate the British victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo. The name Manora is derived from the word minaret, reflecting its unique design. Architecturally, the site features an eight-storeyed hexagonal tower standing 23 meters high, showcasing the Nayaka style influenced by Vijayanagara traditions.

The fort holds significant historical value as a symbol of the geopolitical alliances of the early 19th century, marking the end of the Napoleonic Wars through Indian patronage. However, the structure faced severe challenges in December 2004 when it was damaged along with four other nearby monuments during the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. Following this natural disaster, the State Tourism Department initiated plans in 2007 to renovate the fort and upgrade surrounding infrastructure, including improvements to a children's park and the construction of tourist facilities.

Today, Manora Fort remains a recognized cultural heritage site under the protection of the state party of India, designated as such in 2008. While it serves as a testament to the region's complex colonial history and architectural ingenuity, its condition reflects both the resilience of the structure and the ongoing efforts to preserve it for tourism. The site continues to attract visitors interested in its rare hexagonal form and its connection to global historical events, standing as a solitary sentinel on the Tamil Nadu coast.
