Mangup

Mangup, also known as Mangup Kale, is a historic fortress and cave town situated on a high plateau in Crimea, approximately thirteen kilometers east of Sevastopol within the Bakhchysarai Raion. Recognized as a National Historic Site of Ukraine, the complex features the ruins of a formidable citadel gate and extensive cave settlements carved directly into the rock. The settlement holds profound historical significance as the capital of the Principality of Theodoro, the last remnant of the Crimean Goths. Originally known as Dory or Doros during the Byzantine era, it served as a crucial stronghold for Ostrogoths who refused to follow Theodoric the Great into Italy. Throughout its existence, the city was referred to by various names including Theodoro and Tedoro in Genoese documents, reflecting its role as a multicultural hub where Greek, Gothic, and later Kipchak influences converged. A fourteenth-century inscription famously described it as the God-guarded fortress of Theodoro, highlighting its spiritual and defensive importance to its citizens, the Theodorites.

Today, Mangup exists as an atmospheric archaeological site characterized by weathered stone ruins and silent cave chambers. Although no longer inhabited, it remains a key destination for historians and tourists interested in the medieval history of the Black Sea region.
