Manauli Fort

Manauli Fort, also known as Quila Manauli, is a historic fortress situated in the hamlet of Manauli within the Mohali district of Punjab, India. Located approximately 11 kilometers from both Mohali city and Chandigarh, the structure stands about 20 feet above the surrounding village habitation. While the exact construction date remains a subject of historical debate, local lore and academic research suggest origins ranging from the 17th to the 18th century. The fort was originally built by the Mughal Empire, reflecting the architectural style of that era, before later coming under the control of Nawab Kapur Singh of the Singhpuria Misl. This transition marks its significance as a site where power shifted from imperial rulers to emerging Sikh leadership during a turbulent period in regional history.

The fort holds considerable historical importance due to its association with a decisive battle between the forces of Banda Singh Bahadur and the Mughal army. According to local accounts, Sikh forces achieved victory at this location after suffering persecution under Mughal administrators, cementing the site's place in the narrative of Sikh resistance. Today, the property is controlled by the Government of Punjab, having previously been held by the descendants of Sardar Kapoor Singh. Despite being technically open to the public, the fortress is currently in a derelict condition described as not good. It suffers from poor accessibility and a general lack of public awareness regarding its existence, leaving it somewhat isolated despite its proximity to major urban centers and the international airport road.
