Lurgan Castle or Brownlow House

Brownlow House, historically known as Lurgan Castle or Brownlow Castle, is a prominent Grade A listed building situated in Lurgan, Northern Ireland. Completed in 1833, this grand residence was commissioned by the Irish politician Charles Brownlow, 1st Baron Lurgan, and designed by the renowned Scottish architect William Henry Playfair. The structure is celebrated for its distinctive Elizabethan architectural style, which has defined its appearance since the early 19th century. Originally serving as the private family seat of the Brownlows, the property remained in their possession until the early 20th century before changing hands to local organizations.

The castle holds significant historical importance due to its extensive military service during both global conflicts of the 20th century. During the First World War, it functioned as the headquarters for the 16th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles and the 10th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers. Its strategic role continued into the Second World War when it served as a base for American troops stationed in the region. This dual legacy as a stately home and a crucial military command center underscores its unique place in local and national history.

Today, Brownlow House is owned by the Lurgan Loyal Orange District Lodge and operates as a venue for events and tourism. Although the building suffered severe damage from an arson attack in 1996, it underwent a meticulous restoration process involving experts who had previously worked on Windsor Castle. To honor its martial past, museums dedicated to its roles in World War I and World War II were opened in the basement in 2014 and 2015 respectively, allowing visitors to explore its rich and varied heritage.
