Luni

Luni is a historic town situated in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, India, located approximately 35 kilometers south of the district headquarters. Positioned centrally within the state on the banks of the Luni River, the settlement serves as the administrative headquarter for the Luni tehsil. The area is characterized by a distinct climate with hot, humid summers reaching temperatures up to 44 degrees Celsius and mild winters ranging between 15 and 25 degrees. Beyond its geographical significance, the town is renowned for its community of skilled artisans who continue to practice ancestral professions, fashioning intricate forms from metal, clay, and wood.

The most prominent historical landmark in the region is Fort Chanwa, a striking structure built from red sandstone sourced from nearby Jodhpur. Constructed around 1895 by Kaviraja Muraridan of Bhandiyawas, the fort was established after he received Luni as a jagir, or land grant, during the reign of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II of Marwar. Architecturally, the fort is celebrated for its manicured gardens, carved lattice work friezes, and traditional Jharokas, or balconies, which exemplify the region's design heritage. This site holds significant historical value as a symbol of the feudal era in Rajasthan before transitioning into a modern role.

Today, Fort Chanwa has been repurposed as a heritage hotel, allowing visitors to experience its grandeur firsthand while preserving its structural integrity. In addition to the fort, the nearby village of Shikarpura hosts a famous ashram established by Saint Raja Ram, adding a spiritual dimension to the local tourist attractions. While Luni functions as a standard municipal town with modern administrative leadership, its identity remains deeply rooted in its historical architecture and enduring craft traditions, making it a notable destination for those interested in Rajasthani culture and history.
