Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress, is a historic military structure located just outside the western walls of Dubrovnik in Dalmatia, Croatia. Perched on a limestone cliff thirty-seven meters above sea level, the fortress is often referred to as Dubrovnik's Gibraltar due to its imposing presence overlooking both land and sea entrances to the city. Although chronologists debate whether construction began in 1018 or 1038, the first official records date to 1301. The structure was built by the citizens of the Republic of Ragusa in a remarkable three-month period to preempt Venetian plans to establish a stronghold on the same site. When Venetian ships eventually arrived with construction materials, they were turned away, cementing the fort's role as a symbol of local independence and resistance against foreign domination.

The fortress features a distinctive triangular layout with three terraces and walls of varying thickness designed for strategic defense. The outer walls facing potential invaders are an immense twelve meters thick, while the inner walls facing the city are only sixty centimeters thick, allowing the city's own cannons to easily destroy the fort if it were ever captured by enemies. Above the entrance gate, a famous inscription declares that liberty cannot be sold for all the gold in the world. Today, the well-preserved site is owned by the City of Dubrovnik and remains open to the public. Beyond its military history, Lovrijenac has found new life as a cultural venue, serving as the primary stage for Shakespearean plays during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and hosting productions like Hamlet. Its dramatic scenery has also attracted modern filmmakers, including the television series Knightfall.
