Ljubuški Fortress

Ljubuški Fortress, also known as Herceg Stjepan's Fortress, is a medieval military installation situated in the municipality of Ljubuški, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Perched atop the karstic rocky ridge of Buturovice hill at an elevation of 396 meters, the structure commands a strategic view over the eastern end of Ljubuško polje. Constructed primarily from local limestone during the 15th century, the fortress was built by Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, the Grand Duke of Bosnia and Herzog of Saint Sava. Its location on a solid rocky position provided natural defensive advantages, and while the site dates back to medieval times, modern access was improved with the construction of a macadam road to its foothills following the Bosnian War in the mid-1990s.

The fortress holds significant historical value as a focal point of regional power struggles in the late Middle Ages. First mentioned in 1452, it served as a refuge for Herceg Stjepan during internal conflicts with his sons, Vladislav and Vlatko. Although Vladislav attempted to seize the stronghold from his father that same year, the effort failed. The site later witnessed broader geopolitical shifts, including captures by Ottoman forces in 1463 and 1527, as well as a brief occupation by Matthias Corvinus in 1471. It is also historically linked to the coronation events of the last Bosnian king, Stephen Tomašević, in 1461, marking it as a witness to the final days of the independent Bosnian kingdom before Ottoman domination.

Today, the Ljubuški Fortress stands as a protected cultural heritage site, designated as a Category II National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments in October 2003. Recognized under the official name "Old fort of Ljubuški, the architectural ensemble," it meets multiple criteria for historical and architectural significance. While specific details regarding its current structural condition or active use are not extensively documented in available records, its status as a national monument ensures its preservation as a key historical landmark representing the region's complex medieval history and architectural legacy.
