Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal

Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal is not a castle but a historic Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Army, headquartered at its regimental armoury located at 3721 Henri-Julien Avenue in Montreal, Quebec. Founded on June 18, 1869, originally as The Mount Royal Rifles, the unit has undergone several redesignations throughout its long history before adopting its current name in 1931. As a francophone unit, it holds a distinct place within the Canadian military structure, operating under the 34 Canadian Brigade Group. The regimental motto, Nunquam retrorsum, translates to never backward, reflecting the enduring spirit of the organization since its inception in the late nineteenth century.

The regiment possesses significant historical importance, having been mobilized in 1885 to suppress the North-West Rebellion. Its most notable combat contributions occurred during the Second World War, when it raised an overseas battalion that participated in the ill-fated Dieppe Raid and subsequent campaigns across northwest Europe. The unit also perpetuates the legacy of battalions that served in the First World War and has seen personnel deployed to modern conflicts, including the War in Afghanistan. Notable commanders include Lieutenant-Colonel Jacques Alfred Dextraze, who later rose to the rank of General. During the early 1950s, the regiment also mobilized temporary companies for service with NATO in Germany and the United Nations in Korea.

Today, Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal remains an active light infantry battalion within the Canadian Army Reserve. The regimental armoury in Montreal serves as its garrison and a hub for training and ceremonial duties. While the physical structure of the armoury is a functional military facility rather than a tourist castle, it stands as a monument to the unit's continuous service from 1869 to the present day. The regiment maintains its traditions through its marching past, The Jockey of York, and preserves its heritage through regimental colors and flags displayed at its headquarters.
