Le Castella

Le Castella is a historic coastal village located in the Calabria region of southern Italy, administratively part of the comune of Isola di Capo Rizzuto within the province of Crotone. Situated on the Ionian coast at the eastern end of the Gulf of Squillace, it lies approximately 20 kilometers from Crotone. The settlement is renowned for its distinctive fortress that appears surrounded by the sea, set against a backdrop of varied beaches and cliffs. This area falls within the Marine Protected Area Capo Rizzuto, which safeguards rich marine flora and fauna and stands as the largest protected marine zone in Italy.

The site possesses deep historical roots stretching back to antiquity, with archaeological evidence indicating settlements from the fourth and third centuries BC. Local tradition and ancient sources link the location to Hannibal during the Second Punic War and later to Roman colonists who established a stable community known as Castra. Throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the village evolved under Arab control before becoming integrated into the Kingdom of Naples. The prominent fortress, often called Castellorum maris, underwent significant reconstruction under the Aragonese dynasty between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, defining its current architectural character as a sea-facing defensive structure.

During the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, Le Castella suffered repeated raids by Ottoman forces, including a notable attack in 1536 by Hayreddin Barbarossa. These conflicts led to a prolonged decline, resulting in the official abandonment of the settlement by royal order in 1644. Gradual repopulation occurred in the late seventeenth century, with the fortress serving as a refuge for locals. In the modern era, the village remained a minor settlement within the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and later unified Italy, experiencing urban expansion in the twentieth century following land reforms while retaining its status as a culturally significant historical landmark.
