Larochette Castle

Larochette Castle, known locally as Buerg Fiels or Burg Fels, is a historic fortress situated on a dramatic promontory approximately 150 meters above the White Ernz river in the town of Larochette, central Luxembourg. Originally constructed in the 11th century, the site served as the seat of the Lords of Larochette, who held the prestigious role of flag bearers for the Counts of Luxembourg. The complex eventually expanded to include five distinct stately houses, such as the Homburg and Créhange Manors, reflecting a pompous architectural style indicative of the family's prosperity. A deep ditch historically divided the main structure from these surrounding manor houses, while a solitary watchtower known as Verlorenkost stands apart on the southern side.

The castle met a destructive fate when it was consumed by fire at the end of the 16th century, leaving behind the extensive ruins visible today. Despite this devastation, the site retains significant historical allure through its associated legends. One tale recounts the origin of the Verlorenkost tower, named after a clumsy cook who spilled her provisions, while another dark story involves a castle well where a steward was allegedly thrown to his death and is said to reappear as a dragon every Good Friday. Following centuries of decay, the State of Luxembourg acquired the property in 1979 and has since undertaken restoration efforts to preserve the remaining walls and manor houses, some of which now display period artwork.

Currently, Larochette Castle operates as a popular tourist attraction, open to the public daily from Easter until the end of October. Visitors can explore the fortified earthworks, the partly destroyed surrounding walls, and the reconstructed models that illustrate the fortress's former grandeur. The site offers a unique glimpse into medieval Luxembourgish history, combining tangible architectural remnants with rich local folklore. Its strategic location high above the town provides sweeping views of the landscape, making it a noteworthy destination for those interested in both military architecture and the cultural heritage of the region.
