Lambert Castle

Lambert Castle, originally named Belle Vista, stands prominently within the Garret Mountain Reservation in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey. Constructed in 1892, this historic residence was commissioned by Catholina Lambert, a wealthy silk mill owner who sought to recreate the medieval castles he remembered from his childhood in Great Britain. The structure is a striking example of Medieval Revival architecture, featuring a distinctive Gothic style that sets it apart in the local landscape. Its historical importance was formally recognized when it was added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1975 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its significance in art, architecture, and industry.

The castle boasts a rich and varied history beyond its residential origins. In 1898, it hosted President William McKinley and Vice President Garret Hobart as distinguished guests. Twelve years later, the grounds served as a film set for D.W. Griffith's 1910 movie The Call To Arms, which featured early cinema stars Mary Pickford and Henry B. Walthall. Following Lambert's death in 1923, the property changed hands several times, eventually being acquired by Passaic County. Initially used for administrative offices, the building gradually transformed into a cultural hub when the Passaic County Historical Society was granted space in 1936.

Over the decades, the museum expanded room by room until it occupied the entire first floor. A comprehensive multimillion-dollar restoration completed in the late 1990s revitalized the structure, allowing all four floors to be developed into a full-scale museum and library. Today, Lambert Castle remains a vital educational resource and tourist attraction, preserving the legacy of Paterson's industrial past while showcasing its unique architectural heritage. The site continues to operate in excellent condition, serving as a testament to the vision of its original builder and the community efforts that saved it.
