Laarne Castle

Laarne Castle, known locally as Kasteel van Laarne, is a historic water castle located in the municipality of Laarne in East Flanders, Belgium, approximately fifteen kilometers southeast of Ghent. Constructed around the year 1300 using limestone, the fortress exemplifies medieval military architecture with its distinctive moat, gatehouse, and defensive towers. The original structure was commissioned by the knight Gerard van Massemen, who erected a gatehouse with a wooden bridge, three round towers, and a square keep. A private chapel was added to the keep circa 1350, where fragments of original wall paintings from that era remarkably survive today.

The site holds deep historical significance dating back to the early thirteenth century when Beatrix van Massemen was recorded as the lady of Laarne. Her son, Giselbrecht van Zottegem, likely built the residence's forerunner after returning from military campaigns that included serving King John of England during the Magna Carta rebellion and participating in the Fifth Crusade in Egypt. The castle played a strategic role in regional conflicts, notably during the revolt of Ghent against the Count of Flanders. In 1382, the fortress was besieged, captured, and set ablaze by rebel forces, leaving visible fire damage that persisted for centuries before the family regained possession in 1390.

Throughout the fifteenth century, the estate changed hands through inheritance to the de Vos family and remained a focal point during uprisings against Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Today, Laarne Castle is owned by the Royal Association of Historic Residences and Gardens of Belgium. While specific details regarding public access are not always prominently advertised, the structure stands as a well-preserved testament to Flemish feudal history, maintaining its characteristic water defenses and medieval layout near the banks of the local waterways.
