Krásna Hôrka Castle

Krásna Hôrka Castle is a historic fortress located on a hilltop overlooking the village of Krásnohorské Podhradie in the Košice Region of Slovakia. Its name translates to "beautiful mountain," reflecting its scenic position. Originally constructed in the 13th century by the Ákos brothers, the castle was strategically built along a vital trade route connecting Transylvania to Poland. First recorded in 1333, it served as the ancestral seat of the Ákos family, later known as the Bebek family, from the mid-1200s until 1566. Subsequently, it passed to the prominent Andrássy family in 1578, who retained ownership until the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. Due to its architectural integrity and historical value, the site was designated a National Cultural Monument of the Slovak Republic in 1961 and was once considered one of the country's best-preserved castles.

The castle underwent significant renovation between 2010 and 2011, reopening to the public in April 2011 with restored interior furnishings. However, its condition changed drastically on March 10, 2012, when a devastating fire caused extensive damage to the structure. The blaze was accidentally started by two teenagers who carelessly discarded a cigarette, igniting dry grass that quickly spread to the building. This tragic event destroyed much of the historic interior and roof, halting public access. Following the disaster, the castle entered a prolonged phase of reconstruction efforts to restore the landmark. Today, it stands as a significant site of both cultural heritage and cautionary history, undergoing careful restoration to recover its former glory after the severe destruction it suffered in the early 21st century.
