Krageholm Castle

Krageholm Castle
wikipedia

Krageholm Castle is a historic estate located in Ystad Municipality within the Scania region of southern Sweden. Originally constructed in the 16th century, the site has roots extending back to the 14th century when it was first recorded as property of the Due family. Over the centuries, ownership passed through several prominent noble houses, including the Tott, Brahe, Marsvin, and Krabbe families. During the period when Scania was under Danish rule, the fortress was known as Krogholm. The structure stands as a testament to the region's shifting national borders and aristocratic heritage, currently remaining in private hands and accessible to visitors only by prior appointment.

The castle holds significant historical weight due to its involvement in the Scanian War between 1676 and 1679. Its most famous owner, Baron Jörgen Krabbe, pledged allegiance to Sweden when the territory was ceded in 1658 but was later executed for alleged treason and collusion with Denmark. Following intense fighting and bombardment on the grounds, the impoverished widow of Krabbe sold the property. In 1704, it was acquired by Carl Piper, and the name was officially changed to the Swedish-sounding Krageholm. In the 1720s, his widow, Christina Piper, extensively restored and remodeled the building in the Baroque architectural style, using it as her primary residence until her death.

Since the renovations by Christina Piper, the estate has remained closely tied to the Piper family, who owned it from 1752 to 1897 and regained possession after a brief interim held by the Brahe family in the early 20th century. Today, Krageholm Castle continues to serve as a private residence while preserving its rich architectural and military history. The grounds reflect centuries of conflict and transformation, evolving from a medieval stronghold into an elegant Baroque manor that symbolizes the complex political history of Scania.
