Konda Reddy Fort

Konda Reddy Fort, also known as Kondareddy Buruju, is a historic military installation located in the heart of Kurnool city within the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Situated conveniently close to the Kurnool Railway Station and the New Bus Stand, this imposing structure represents the only remaining fragment of the city's ancient fortification system. The original construction dates back to the 12th century when the site served as a strategic base for crossing the Tungabhadra River. However, the primary fortifications were significantly developed between 1530 and 1542 under the patronage of Vijayanagara Emperors Devaraya II and Achyutaraya. Built primarily using stone and mud, the architecture features a distinctive semi-circular bastion crowned with a tower, reflecting the defensive styles of the region during the medieval period.

The fort holds deep historical significance tied to local legends and royal conflicts of the 17th century. It is named after Konda Reddy, the last ruler of Alampur, who was famously imprisoned within its walls by the Kurnool Nawab. Folklore recounts that Reddy utilized secret tunnels housed within the fort to escape captivity, although he ultimately lost his territory to the Golconda Nawabs. While these mysterious tunnels are now sealed and inaccessible to the public, the gateways and bastions added by Gopala Raja, a descendant of Rama Raya, remain part of the site's complex history. The structure historically functioned as a crucial watchtower throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, overseeing the surrounding landscape.

Today, Konda Reddy Fort stands in a state of ruins but has undergone restoration efforts in recent years to preserve its heritage. The monument comprises three levels, though the ground floor remains closed to visitors for safety or preservation reasons. Tourists are permitted to climb to the first and second floors, where they can explore large porticos and an observation tower that offer panoramic views of the city. Currently open to the public, the site has evolved into a popular cultural landmark and a favored gathering spot for couples and young residents of Kurnool. It serves as both a testament to the region's turbulent past and a living part of the community's present-day social landscape.
