Koło Castle

Koło Castle is a historic Gothic fortress located in Gozdów, within the Greater Poland Voivodeship of Poland. Constructed on an artificial hill situated on a meander of the Warta River, the castle was strategically positioned to secure the route between Greater Poland and Łęczyca. While archaeological evidence suggests earlier defensive structures may have existed under rulers like Bolesław the Pious, the primary stone donjon and fortifications were commissioned by King Casimir III the Great prior to 1362. This timing coincided with Koło receiving its town rights, marking the site as a crucial element of regional defense and royal administration during the late medieval period.

The castle holds significant historical importance as a venue for high-level political and military strategy. It hosted the legation of the Lizard Union and served as a planning ground for critical decisions following the Battle of Grunwald during the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. In the late fifteenth century, it functioned as the residence for Princess Anna of Sochaczew. However, the structure began to deteriorate by the mid-sixteenth century and suffered further damage after being captured by Swedish forces in 1655. In the eighteenth century, King Augustus III granted the ruins to the Bernardine monks, who partially dismantled the castle to repair their monastery, though the robust mortar prevented total destruction.

Today, Koło Castle exists as a preserved ruin, standing as a testament to its resilient construction and turbulent past. Although the building was never fully demolished due to the strength of its original masonry, it remains in a fragmented state following centuries of decay and repurposing. The site offers visitors a glimpse into the architectural prowess of the Gothic era and the strategic military history of the Warta River lowlands. Despite the loss of its complete form, the remaining foundations and walls continue to mark the location as a key landmark in Polish heritage, reflecting its evolution from a royal stronghold to a monastic quarry and finally to a historical monument.
