Kōfu Castle

Kōfu Castle, also known as Maizuru Castle, is a historic hirayama-style fortress located in the city of Kōfu within Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Situated on a small hill at the confluence of the Kamanashi and Fuefuki Rivers, the site was originally developed to replace the vulnerable Tsutsujigasaki Palace. Construction began under the orders of warlord Kato Mitsuyasu following the turbulent Sengoku Period but was completed in 1593 by his successor, Asano Nagamasa. The castle served as a strategic military installation and administrative center for the region from its completion until the Meiji Restoration in 1871, playing a pivotal role during the power struggles between the Tokugawa, Oda, and Takeda clans.

Architecturally, the castle featured a distinctive T-shaped layout spread across terraced ridges covering approximately 200 by 100 meters. The inner bailey sat atop the hill and originally housed a majestic four-story tenshu keep, which was painted black and adorned with gold-colored roof tiles. Although the main structures were demolished in 1873 during the modernization of Japan, the site has undergone partial reconstruction to preserve its historical appearance. Today, the grounds function as Maizuru Castle Park, a public space famous for its cherry blossoms that allows visitors to explore the remnants of this once-grand fortification.

The historical significance of Kōfu Castle extends beyond its military utility, representing the successful flood control projects initiated by Takeda Shingen that made the area habitable. After centuries of neglect following its demolition, the site received formal protection as a National Historic Site of Japan in 2019. This designation ensures the preservation of the earthworks and reconstructed elements, honoring the legacy of the various warlords who governed Kai Province from this location. It remains a key cultural landmark in the Chubu region, offering insight into the evolution of Japanese castle architecture and local history.
