Kinkelenburg Castle

Kinkelenburg Castle is located in Bemmel, just north of Nijmegen within the municipality of Lingewaard in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Its origins likely date back to the 13th century, beginning as a walled island with a keep surrounded by a canal. First mentioned in historical records in 1403 under the ownership of Johan van Ambe, the structure originally featured a gate tower from that same era. Over the following centuries, specifically during the 16th and 17th centuries, connecting buildings were added between the towers, and a new wing was constructed in 1765. The etymology of the name Kinkelenburg remains unknown to historians.

The castle underwent significant transformation in the 19th century when private owners converted it into a villa, causing it to lose much of its original medieval character. During the Second World War, the building served a critical role as an emergency hospital. Following the war, it was owned by the Homan van der Heide family until 1948, when they sold the property to the municipality of Bemmel. A major restoration project took place in the 1950s under the direction of Charles Estourgie Jr., which helped preserve the historic structure for future generations.

Today, Kinkelenburg Castle functions as a prominent wedding and meeting venue managed by the municipality of Lingewaard. While it no longer operates as a traditional museum or private residence, it stands as a designated national monument that reflects centuries of local history. The site combines its ancient foundations with later architectural additions, offering a unique setting that bridges its past as a fortified stronghold and emergency medical facility with its current use as a civic gathering place.
