Katthamra Mansion

Katthamra Mansion, locally known as Katthamra gård, is a distinctive manor house situated in Katthammarsvik within the Östergarn parish on the island of Gotland, Sweden. While the estate's origins trace back to the Middle Ages, the current main building largely dates from the 18th century and was significantly enlarged in 1805 into its present Neoclassical form. This two-storey structure features a hip roof and is crowned by a statue of the mythological huntress Diana above the main entrance. The interior is renowned for its magnificent murals painted by artist Jonas Torssén, serving as a fine example of upper-class accommodation from the 1800s. Unusual for Gotland, where such grand manors are rare, the estate historically thrived due to profits generated from local limestone extraction during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The property boasts a rich lineage of notable owners, beginning with Peder Fleming in 1652 and later including merchant Jacob Dubbe and ancestors of linguist Johan Ihre. For approximately 150 years starting in the early 19th century, the farm remained in the possession of the Hägg family descendants. This era produced prominent figures such as Rear Admiral Jacob Hägg and his brother, the celebrated architect and artist Axel Herman Haig. Their long tenure helped shape the cultural and architectural identity of the estate, linking it to significant Swedish historical narratives.

Today, Katthamra Mansion has undergone extensive renovations to preserve its historical integrity while adapting to modern needs. Recent restoration efforts have included installing new roofs on six buildings and preparing three structures specifically for rental purposes. Alongside the main house, the estate comprises several annexes and maintained gardens. It stands today not only as a protected piece of architectural heritage but also as an active venue that continues to honor its legacy through careful preservation and contemporary usage.
