wikipedia

Kaštilac is a historic fortress located in Kaštel Gomilica within the Split-Dalmatia county of Croatia. Situated on a small islet approximately 40 meters off the Adriatic coast in central Dalmatia, it holds the distinction of being the only castle among the seven famous fortifications in the Kaštela region. Constructed in 1545 by Benedictine nuns, the structure was built primarily from local limestone to serve as a defensive stronghold. Its architectural design features a square floor plan and a prominent high tower guarding the entrance, which is accessed via a stone bridge with arches that replaced an original drawbridge.

The site possesses deep historical roots extending back to 1078, when King Zvonimir of Croatia donated the land to the Benedictine order. While a Romanesque church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian was erected on the grounds in the 12th century, the fortified settlement itself was a direct response to the growing threat of Ottoman invasions. Upon its completion, the fortress provided refuge for inhabitants from the villages of Upper and Lower Kozica, who had been displaced after their homes were devastated by Turkish forces. By the 17th century, as regional conflicts subsided, the tower gradually lost its primary military function.

Today, Kaštilac has evolved from a religious military installation into a settled community while retaining its status as a significant cultural landmark. The fortress remains open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its unique position connected to the mainland solely by its historic stone bridge. As the best-preserved example of its kind in the area, it stands as a testament to the resilience of the local population and the strategic importance of the Dalmatian coast during the medieval and early modern periods.

Notes
Kaštilac Castle, locally known as just 'Kaštilac', lies in the town of Kaštel Gomilica, in the county of Split-Dalmatia in Croatia. After the fall of Bosnia to the Ottoman Empire in 1463, Dalmatia, being part of the Venetian Republic, faced the danger of Ottoman invasions. Local landowners; the Split Archbishopric, monasteries and nobles from Trogir and Split, therefore wished to protect their estates and the villagers working for them. So, during the following decades they started to build 17 fortifications and fortified 12 villages along the coast of the Kaštela Bay, between Trogir and Split.
