Kaminoyama Castle

Kaminoyama Castle, also historically known as Tsukioka Castle, is a hirayama-style Japanese fortress situated in the center of Kaminoyama city within Yamagata Prefecture. The original foundations were established in 1535 by Takenaga Yoshitada, a retainer of the powerful Mogami clan, during the turbulent Muromachi period when the region was frequently contested between rival warlords. Throughout the subsequent Edo period, the site served as the administrative headquarters for the lords of the Kaminoyama Domain. Although the castle changed hands among various daimyo families and saw its revenues fluctuate, it remained a central political hub until the Meiji Restoration. Notably, a donjon constructed under the Toki clan was destroyed in 1692 following their transfer to another region.

Following the abolition of the han system in 1871, the castle grounds were sold to the government in 1872 and converted into a public park, leading to the demolition of most original structures. However, the site retains significant historical value and features the Tsukioka Shrine within its premises. In 1982, a concrete reconstruction of a typical Edo-period castle tower was erected on the location of the second bailey to serve as a tourist attraction and house a local history museum. Today, the reconstructed keep stands as a prominent landmark, offering visitors insight into the area's feudal past while functioning as an accessible cultural site open to the public.
