Jhansi Fort
wikipedia

Jhansi Fort, also known as Jhansi ka Qila, is a historic fortress situated on the Bangira hilltop in the center of Jhansi city, Uttar Pradesh, India. While its exact construction date is not specified in available records, the site served as a strategic stronghold for the Karhade Brahmin kings from the 11th through the 17th century. The structure was significantly expanded in the 18th century under Maratha administration, particularly by Subedar Naroshanker, who added the Shankergarh extension. Built primarily using stone, lime, and lead, the fort rises to a height of 285 meters and showcases military architecture typical of North Indian hill fortresses designed for defense and surveillance.

The fort holds immense historical significance due to its association with the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the legendary Rani Lakshmibai. After passing through the hands of the Maratha Empire, Peshwas, Newalkars, and Scindias, it became a focal point of resistance against the British Raj. The nearby Star Fort, a British settlement established by treaty in 1804, was stormed during the uprising, leading to the famous Siege of Jhansi in 1858. Today, the property is owned by the Government of India and remains in good condition. It operates as a public heritage site open daily from 7 am to 6 pm, allowing visitors to explore its rich past and architectural grandeur.
