Jemeppe Castle
wikipedia

Jemeppe Castle, also known as Hargimont Castle, is a historic fortress located in Hargimont within the municipality of Marche-en-Famenne in the province of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium. While the site originally hosted a fortified villa during the Roman era, the current structure traces its medieval origins to the early 13th century. Initially established as a modest manor surrounded by marshland and the Hedrée river, it was soon replaced by a substantial donjon built by Jean d'Ochain. This central tower featured five storeys with a single ground-floor entrance, serving both as living quarters for the nobility and a refuge for locals during the territorial conflicts between the counties of Namur and Luxembourg.

The architectural evolution of the castle continued significantly after 1616, when Raes d'Ans expanded the original tower into a square castle complex complete with wings, farmsteads, and a double moat system. Subsequent centuries brought further modifications, including modernization of the wings in the 1700s and extensive renovations between 1865 and 1875 under Adrien de Sauvage-Vercour. These later works added pitched roofs, attics, and a distinctive crowning apex to the donjon, replacing the old flat roof with the steep design visible today. Decorative medieval-style weathervanes bearing family monograms were also installed, highlighting the blend of defensive utility and aristocratic residence that defines its style.

Currently, Jemeppe Castle stands as a well-preserved example of Belgian heritage and remains open to the public. Its history reflects the shifting power dynamics of the region, transitioning through prominent families such as the d'Ochain, d'Ans, and de Sauvage-Vercour lines. The structure serves as a tangible record of military architecture adapting into a stately home, maintaining its historical integrity while welcoming visitors to explore its grounds and learn about its role in the local history of the Famenne region.
