Jaigad Fort

Jaigad Fort is a historic coastal fortification situated at the tip of a peninsula in Jaigad, within the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India. Located approximately 14 kilometers from the temple town of Ganpatipule, the structure nestles on a cliff overlooking the bay where the Shastri River meets the Arabian Sea. While the exact construction date is unrecorded, the fort is presumed to have been originally built by the Bijapur Sultanate during the 16th century. It features a distinct architectural layout spanning 13 acres, characterized by robust outer walls and ramparts that largely remain intact despite its ruined status. A deep moat protects the landward side, while the seaward side relies on the natural defense of the cliff edge.

The site holds significant historical value due to its strategic role in maritime defense and its association with the legendary Maratha naval commander Kanhoji Angre. After passing through the hands of the Naiks of Sangameshwar, who successfully defeated combined Bijapur and Portuguese forces in the late 16th century, the fort was ceded to Angre in 1713. Inside the complex, visitors can find the palace of Kanhoji Angre, a Ganpati temple, and ancient water wells. The fort remained under Maratha control until 1818, when it was captured by the British East India Company without resistance, subsequently becoming part of the British Raj before Indian independence.

Today, Jaigad Fort is recognized as a protected monument and remains open to the public. Although classified as ruins, the site offers commanding views of the open sea, a nearby power plant, and the adjacent Angrey jetty port and lighthouse. The enduring presence of its defensive walls provides a tangible link to India's coastal military history, serving as a testament to the region's turbulent past involving various empires and colonial powers. Its preservation ensures that the legacy of the Maratha naval dominance and earlier Sultanate influences continues to be accessible to historians and tourists alike.
