Hoczew

Hoczew is a historic village located in south-eastern Poland within the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, specifically in Lesko County. Situated at the strategic confluence of the Hoczewka and San rivers, it serves as a transport hub connecting several local towns including Baligród and Sanok. While currently classified as a large village with a population of approximately 710, its history dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries, evidenced by an early defensive gord found on a nearby hill. The settlement was first officially mentioned in written records in 1400 and later became the property of the noble Bal family in 1427, who played a pivotal role in its early development and religious history.

The architectural highlight of Hoczew is the parish church dedicated to Saint Anne, a fine example of Baroque architecture consecrated in 1745. This structure houses significant historical artifacts, including a late 17th-century painting of the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and a nobleman's gravestone from 1576. Although records mention a small castle existing in 1493, the site is now better known for its religious monuments and a 19th-century former clergy house that has been converted into an art gallery. The village also features a Roman Catholic cemetery and unique natural formations along the Hoczewka river, preserving both cultural and environmental heritage.

Historically, Hoczew was the center of a notable religious conflict in the 16th century when members of the Bal family converted to Calvinism and attempted to seize control of the local Catholic parish. This led to their excommunication by the Bishop of Przemyśl and a subsequent secular trial, marking a turbulent chapter in the village's past. Today, Hoczew functions primarily as a residential community where many inhabitants commute to work in neighboring Lesko or Sanok. It maintains essential local amenities such as a post office, a hotel named Salamandra, and various dining establishments, serving as a quiet yet historically rich destination in the Bieszczady region.
